Harvey Scott Basketball Program 6700 NE Prescott, Portland

We all meet wonderful people in our lives, people who have a great influence on you and others. My lifelong friend, Ken Lee, is one of those people. He was one of the older kids in my North Portland neighborhood when I was growing up. I met him while playing basketball. Little did I know I would still be playing basketball with him 40+ years later.

Ken became my seventh grade coach during the time he was attending Portland State University to get his teaching degree. He went on to be a grade school PE teacher for Portland Public Schools (PPS), and in 1990 he transferred to Harvey Scott Elementary school in NE Portland.

With the transfer to a new school, Ken started an after school program with two fifth-grade girls teams. Two of the main focuses for the program were to never have try outs and to let every child that wanted to play, play. If a child could not afford to pay the fee, Ken would get sponsors to help offset the cost.

After 30 years of working in PPS, Ken retired in 1999. He continues to volunteer as the basketball coordinator for Harvey Scott, and in the 2006/2007 school year, he had 15 teams of kids ready and able to play and learn teamwork.

Matrix Networks is proud to sponsor this program and thanks people like Ken Lee for helping in our community.
